FAQ.

Tips for Enjoying the PROXY Experience

Here are some frequently asked questions about our free outdoor film screenings at PROXY. Feel free to email us at info@proxysf.net with more!

> What is a walk-in theater and where is it located?
The PROXY Walk-in Theater is an open-air venue with a cinema-quality screen and projector — like a drive-in theater only without the cars. It’s located in the heart of San Francisco, at 432 Octavia Street at the corner of Hayes and Octavia Streets.

> Do I need tickets?
Screenings are free and open to all. And because it’s outdoors, people are welcome to drop in throughout the evening. Tickets aren’t needed, but we encourage you to register on Eventbrite or Facebook so we can alert you about any program changes that may occur. You can also follow us on Instagram for updates.

> Are there seats in the walk-in theater?
Most people enjoy movies at PROXY “picnic style” on blankets, low camp chairs, or green turf (ask for it at the projection container) — claiming a spot on a first come, first served basis. For very popular movies, our large outdoor venue does fill up, so make sure to come early to grab a good seat!

> Are the films suitable for families?
Our mission is to introduce the best in contemporary independent film to as wide an audience as possible. However, some themes and content may not be for everyone. We’ve provided ratings when available, but please review each film to make an appropriate personal judgement for you and your family. Starting in 2024, we’re including at least one kid-oriented, family friendly film per festival season!

> Are subtitles available?
Yes! Subtitles for films are available where indicated on the individual film listings on our Upcoming Events page. If you are interested in requesting subtitles for a film, please email us at info@proxysf.net.

> Is food available during the screenings?
We will have alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks for sale, with all proceeds supporting ongoing programming at PROXY! You can also grab a coffee from Ritual, ice cream from Hometown Creamery, or German food from Biergarten. All three restaurants are located at PROXY. However, laws prohibit outside alcohol at our events.

> What if it rains?
Rain happens. If it’s in the forecast, we’ll decide one day before whether to reschedule a screening. Those who have registered on Eventbrite or Facebook will receive an email alert about the change. Otherwise, please look for updates on our Instagram or Upcoming Events page.

> Won’t it be cold?
Evenings in San Francisco typically are cool to cold. We recommend bringing warm layers and a few friends to stay cozy!

>Is there parking close by?
Hayes Valley is well served by San Francisco’s transit systems and bicycle network. We encouraging using alternative transportation to attend all events at PROXY, but parking is also available in nearby garages:

Civic Center Garage: 355 McAllister Street (between Polk + Larkin)
Performing Arts Garage: 360 Grove Street (between Gough + Franklin)
CityPark Opera Plaza: 601 Van Ness Avenue (between Turk + Golden Gate)

> This is amazing, how can I help?
