Barbie

Directed by Greta Gerwig, 2023 [PG-13]

One of the best films of the year in cinematographic terms, probably the best comedy that we have seen in a long time, and an extraordinarily entertaining product that promotes the value of searching for a more cohesive society.”  Sergio Burstein  Los Angeles Times

A visually dazzling comedy whose meta humor is smartly complemented by subversive storytelling. In the film, Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.

April 5th: Perfect Days

The 2023 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema continues on Friday, April 5th at 7:00PM- 10:00PM at the PROXY Community Walk-in Theater with:

Perfect Days

Directed by Wim Wenders, 2023 [PG]

Pay attention to the shadows in “Perfect Days.” Pay attention also to the trees, to the ways Hirayama (Koji Yakusho) looks at them. They’re as much a character in the story as he is.” – Alissa Wilkinson The NewYork Times

An absorbing slice-of-life drama led by a remarkable Kôji Yakusho performance as Hirayama, Perfect Days adds a quietly soaring gem to director/co-writer Wim Wenders’ estimable filmography. In the film, Hirayama works as a public toilet cleaner in Tokyo. He repeats his structured, ritualized life every day starting at dawn. He dedicates his free time to his passion for music, which he listens to in his van to and from work, and to his books, which he reads every night before going to sleep.

TIll

Directed by Chinonye Chukwu, 2022 [PG-13]

“‘A sick feeling of dread propels Chinonye Chukwu’s powerful movie: dread at the racist violence about to happen, dread at the racist violence that is then threatened against those standing up against it.”  -Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Till is a profoundly emotional and cinematic film about the true story of Mamie Till Mobley’s relentless pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, who, in 1955, was lynched while visiting his cousins in Mississippi. Maɬni: Towards the Ocean, Towards the Shore

Directed by Sky Hopinka, 2020 [not rated]

An essential portrait of contemporary Indigenous life that resists the touristic gaze, “Małni — Towards the Ocean, Towards the Shore,” the debut feature from the Ho-Chunk artist and filmmaker Sky Hopinka, isn’t too concerned with whether we fully understand the traditions and rituals it entrancingly commits to screen. Beatrice Loayza,  NYTimes

A documentary circling the origin of the death myth from the Chinookan people in the Pacific Northwest. This film follows Sweetwater Sahme and Jordan Mercier’s wanderings through each of their worlds as they wander through and contemplate the afterlife, rebirth, and the place in-between.  Spoken mostly in chinuk wawa, their stories are departures from the Chinookan origin of death myth, with its distant beginning and circular shape.

Sept 23rd : MEMORIA

The 2022 PROXY Fall Series of outdoor cinema kicks off on Friday, September 23rd at the PROXY Community Walk-in Theater with:

MEMORIA

Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2021 [PG]

“Memoria demands patience and attention… An emotionally wrenching and intellectually fulfilling experience, but not one (that) can be easily summariz(ed) or classifi(ed).”  – A.O. Scott, New York Times

This special showing of Memoria is part of an experimental film tour, traveling around the country one city and theater at a time. This event is a unique opportunity to see this film – showing one night only outdoors in San Francisco!

From the mind of director Apichatpong Weerasethakul comes this adaptation of his own experiences in the Colombia jungle. Starring Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton, this film is a bewildering drama about a Scottish woman, who, after hearing a loud ‘bang’ at daybreak, begins experiencing a mysterious sensory syndrome while traversing the jungles of Colombia. An auditory and psychological experience, this film is an artwork to be enjoyed ephemerally and eternally only on the big screen.

Sept 30 : LEAD ME HOME + PANEL DISCUSSION

The 2022 PROXY Fall Series of outdoor cinema continues on Friday, September 30th at the PROXY Community Walk-in Theater with:

LEAD ME HOME

Directed by Pedro Kos, Jon Shenk, 2021 [PG-13]

“Lead Me Home is a necessary, heartrending piece of art, a vital, poetic examination of the housing crisis and the very real people it affects every day.”  – Jade Budowski, Decider

Special panel discussion with the director and San Francisco residents featured in the film.

More than 500,000 people experience homelessness every night in America, with over 7,700 people in San Francisco alone.  Lead Me Home presents this epidemic of homelessness in America with a show-don’t-tell approach, featuring candid testimonials from those who rest their heads in shelters, tent cities, and anywhere a night’s sleep can be found.  This short film is intentionally a study of contrasts – showing clips of housed individuals against those on the streets – whose basic needs and lives are not so different yet drastically so.  An emotional and honest conversation with unhoused residents from San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle, presenting a dignified portrait of our culture’s fraying edges and the people who inhabit them.

Oct 7th : NEPTUNE FROST

The 2022 PROXY Fall Series of outdoor cinema kicks off on Friday, October 7th at the PROXY Community Walk-in Theater with:

NEPTUNE FROST

Directed by Anisia Uzeyman, Saul Williams, 2021 [not rated]

“‘Neptune Frost’ challenges the interpretive pathways movie audiences have grown so accustomed to navigating. It does not court our understanding, it does not make following easy, but it does whisper to us and spark connections. In that way, it is like a dream: fitful, feverish, promising.”  -Lisa Kennedy, Variety

Heralded as one of the “most extraordinary original experiences of the year”, Neptune Frost is an Afrofuturistic musical that confronts capitalism, migration, homophobia and war in this poetically twisted film.  Opening in the hilltops of Burundi, a group of escaped coltan miners form an anti-colonialist computer hacker collective. From their camp in an otherworldly e-waste dump, they attempt a takeover of the authoritarian regime exploiting the region’s natural resources – and its people. When an intersex runaway and an escaped coltan miner find each other through cosmic forces, their connection sparks glitches within the greater divine circuitry.

HAPPENING

Directed by Audrey Diwan, 2021 [R]

“Timely and urgent, ‘Happening’ is a film that speaks to today’s abortion debate”  – Justin Chang,  NPR

Set in 1963 France, in a society when abortion was still illegal and women’s desires are censured, Anne is a bright young student with a promising future ahead of her. But when she falls pregnant, she sees the opportunity to finish her studies and escape the constraints of her working-class background disappearing.  This simple but cruel story follows the itinerary of a woman who decides to go against the law, facing social ostracization and even prison for taking back her body.  A timely tale, Happening is compassionate, brutally honest, and serves as both a transfixing drama and an urgent reminder of the need to protect women’s reproductive rights.

The 2022 PROXY Fall Series of outdoor cinema continues on Friday, October 21st at the PROXY Community Walk-in Theater with:

PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN

Directed by Emerald Fennell, 2020 [R]

“A deathly dark satire of gender politics.”  – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

A story about loss, about revenge, and one that hits far too close to home for any woman.  Promising Young Woman is a dark satire beautifully shot, centering on Cassie, a medical school dropout whose life has become defined by the horrific loss of her childhood friend.  A reflection on a society that prioritizes the career of a promising young man over some ‘“alleged” incident in which both parties were probably drunk, Cassie takes it further, driving home the hypocrisy of the “nice guy” as they prey on the helpless and vulnerable until she switches from drop-down drunk to icy-sober, forcing them to confront their true intentions.  Full of twists, this film forces the audience to feel uncomfortable while poised on the edge of their seat.

Based on the bestselling book by Naoki Higashida, THE REASON I JUMP is an immersive cinematic exploration of neurodiversity through the experiences of nonspeaking autistic people from around the world. The 2022 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema continues on Friday, April 8th at the PROXY Community Walk-in Theater with:

FLEE

Directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, 2021 [PG-13]

The PROXY Spring Series presents a special pre-screening conversation with Palestinian refugees from Gaza, photographers and journalists Jehad al-Saftawi and Lara Aburamadan. They will share their exile experience, ways of finding familiarity in the new place they call home, and the work of their nonprofit, Refugee Eye.

“All over the world, people are forced to flee their homes. If they’re very lucky, they might resettle in a place where they’ll be able to live some kind of better life. But that doesn’t mean the trauma subsides. By the end, it seems telling his story — saying it out loud in a safe space, at last — may have helped Amin heal a bit more. Perhaps sharing it with audiences opens the same space for others, too.” – Alissa Wilkinson, Vox

Amin Nawabi’s life has been defined by his past and a secret he’s kept for over 20 years. Forced to leave his home country of Afghanistan as a young child with his mother and siblings, Amin now grapples with how his past will affect his future in Denmark and the life he is building with his soon-to-be husband.

PROXY Fall Film Festival 2021: JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH

The 2021 PROXY Fall Film Festival of outdoor cinema concludes on Friday, October 29th at the PROXY Walk-in Theater with:

JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH

Directed by Shaka King, 2020 [R]

“Hampton was just 21 when he was killed in a police raid on Dec. 4, 1969. That’s not a spoiler, just history, and I’d argue that knowing his fate in advance is crucial to an appreciation of “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Though it plays at times like a crime thriller — with stakeouts and shootouts, chases and interrogations — the movie is better understood as a political tragedy. The script, by King and Will Berson, is layered with ethical snares and ideological paradoxes, and while King’s fast-paced direction doesn’t spare the suspense, it also makes room for sorrow, anger and even a measure of exhilaration.”

– A.O. Scott, The New York Times

JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH is the true story of the infiltration of the Chicago branch of the Black Panther Party by informant Bill O’Neal and the assassination of Fred Hampton at the hands of the FBI. Produced by Oakland native Ryan Coogler and directed by Shaka King, the film masterfully explores the history throughout the narrative format, exposing this very recent installment of the federal government’s surveillance and intentional destruction of Black communities.

2021 PROXY Fall Film Festival: PIG

The 2021 PROXY Fall Film Festival of outdoor cinema continues on Friday, October 22nd at the PROXY Walk-in Theater with:

PIG

Directed by Michael Sarnoski, 2021 [R]

“Despite a few scenes here and there of Rob snarling, “I want my pig back!” this movie is not the kind of offbeat goof Cage has become infamous for lately. “Pig” is a rich character study, marked by several riveting Cage monologues, as Rob ruminates on the tricky taste of persimmons, or as he warns the Portland status-seekers that the things they think matter will be wiped away when catastrophe comes.”

 – Noel Murray, LA Times

PIG stars Nicolas Cage as Robin Feld, a former Portland chef who has retired to the woods to hunt for truffles alongside his trained pig, Apple. When Apple is stolen, Robin returns to the city and restaurant community he left behind. Poised to be a smash-and-grab thriller, PIG sheds expectations and plays out as a meditation on the nature of loss and its role in the human experience. Alex Wolff lends his talents in a supporting role, playing a truffle broker whose family history is tied to Robin’s former restaurant.

TRY HARDER!

Directed by Debbie Lum, 2021 [not-rated]

A special Q+A featuring director Debbie Lum and additional crew will follow the screening!

“But underneath the goofiness and gallows humor, there is a darker point being made about the impossible cycle of heightened expectations, cultural stereotyping and ever-shrinking admissions quotas for top-flight colleges. The racial profile of the high-performance Lowell is not a coincidence, but nor is it an uncomplicated advantage for any attendee, Asian or otherwise.”

– Jessica Kiang, Variety

TRY HARDER! is a Sundance selected doc that focuses on five students – four seniors and one junior – attending Lowell High School. The students, all high-achieving, struggle to feel competent in the elite school as they apply for college. The film treats each of its subjects with immense empathy, allowing the students to open themselves up to the audience in their process of discovering their authentic selves.

The 2021 PROXY Fall Film Festival of outdoor cinema continues on Friday, October 8th at the PROXY Walk-in Theater with:

GUNDA

Directed by Viktor Kossakovsky, 2021 [G]

“Gunda may be a meditational slow-burn, but as it unfurls its immersive audiovisual tapestry it hovers between non-fiction observation and lyrical insight, and to that end feels like an advancement of the nature documentary form. At the same time, there is an air of activist intent lurking just outside the parameters of each scene, as it builds an argument against animal cruelty that transcends the boundaries of shrill polemics. If it doesn’t convince meat-eaters to hold the bacon with their eggs — or order eggs in the first place — it might at least compel them to taste some of the pain.”

SUMMER OF SOUL

(…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)

Directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, 2021 [PG-13]

“[SUMMER OF SOUL’S] sense of politics isn’t so despondent. Thompson winds things down with Sly and the Family Stone doing “Higher.” That band was male and female, Black and white — weird, rubbery, ecstatic, yet tight, hailing from no appreciable tradition, inventing one instead. It’s been more than half a century, and I still don’t know where these cats came from. They simply seem sent from an American future that no one has to mourn.”

– Wesley Morris, The New York Times

SUMMER OF SOUL is the directorial debut of the legendary Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, a documentary utilizing archival footage of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival to tell the story of Black America at the time. It is an incredible foray into a new medium for Questlove that offers a celebratory view of Black culture, history, music, and fashion.

2020 PROXY Spring Series: Parasite

The 2020 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema kicks off on Friday, March 20th at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

PARASITE

Directed by Bong Joon Ho, 2019 [R]

“Parasite, which centers on two families on opposite ends of the economic scale whose lives become intertwined, melds Bong’s trademark talent for defying genre categorization and his cutting examinations of capitalism into a film that will take your breath away.”

– Karen Han, Polygon

Meet the Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist, to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide “indispensable” luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims’ newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks. By turns darkly hilarious and heart-wrenching, PARASITE showcases a modern master at the top of his game.

“This could as easily be the past, as viewed through a hall of mirrors, or an apocalyptic near-future, positioning the events on screen either as recontextualized history or timely cautionary tale.”

– Guy Lodge, Variety

As fascism spreads, German refugee Georg (Franz Rogowski) flees to Marseille and assumes the identity of the dead writer whose transit papers he is carrying. Living among refugees from around the world, Georg falls for Marie (Paula Beer), a mysterious woman searching for her husband–the man whose identity he has stolen. 2020 PROXY Spring Series: The Farewell

The 2020 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema continues on Friday, April 3rd at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

THE FAREWELL

Directed by Lulu Wang, 2019 [PG]

“Almost in passing, The Farewell is a movie about the immigrant experience, a very American movie mostly set in Changchun, China. Billi’s grandmother is Chinese. Her parents are in between cultures, and she is mostly American. But they’re all bound together in the mystical allegiance known as family. This tale of cultural transition is an American story that has been told over and over, for centuries. But it rarely gets told this well.”

– Mick LaSalle, The San Francisco Chronicle

In this funny, uplifting tale based on an actual lie, Chinese-born, U.S.-raised Billi (Awkwafina) reluctantly returns to Changchun to find that, although the whole family knows their beloved matriarch, Nai-Nai, has been given mere weeks to live, everyone has decided not to tell Nai Nai herself. To assure her happiness, they gather under the joyful guise of an expedited wedding, uniting family members scattered among new homes abroad. As Billi navigates a minefield of family expectations and proprieties, she finds there’s a lot to celebrate: a chance to rediscover the country she left as a child, her grandmother’s wondrous spirit, and the ties that keep on binding even when so much goes unspoken. With The Farewell, writer/director Lulu Wang has created a heartfelt celebration of both the way we perform family and the way we live it, masterfully interweaving a gently humorous depiction of the good lie in action with a richly moving story of how family can unite and strengthen us, often in spite of ourselves.

Haunted by an unexplainable and unresolved trauma from her past and compounded by a string of eerie coincidences, Adelaide feels her paranoia elevate to high-alert as she grows increasingly certain that something bad is going to befall her family. After spending a tense beach day with their friends, the Tylers (Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Cali Sheldon, Noelle Sheldon), Adelaide and her family return to their vacation home. When darkness falls, the Wilsons discover the silhouette of four figures holding hands as they stand in the driveway. Us pits an endearing American family against a terrifying and uncanny opponent: doppelgängers of themselves.

2019 PROXY Fall Film Fest: Woman at War

The 2019 PROXY Fall Film Fest of outdoor cinema continues on Friday, October 25th at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

Woman at War

Directed by Benedikt Erlingsson, 2018 [Not Rated]

What can one person do to combat the forces of climate change and globalized industry? Quite a bit, as Benedikt Erlingsson would have us believe in Woman at War.

– Lisa Trifone, Third Coast Review

Halla is a fifty-year-old independent woman. But behind the scenes of a quiet routine, she leads a double life as a passionate environmental activist. Known to others only by her alias “The Woman of the Mountain,” Halla secretly wages a one-woman-war on the local aluminum industry. As Halla’s actions grow bolder, from petty vandalism to outright industrial sabotage, she succeeds in pausing the negotiations between the Icelandic government and the corporation building a new aluminum smelter. But right as she begins planning her biggest and boldest operation yet, she receives an unexpected letter that changes everything.

2019 PROXY Fall Film Fest: Booksmart

The 2019 PROXY Fall Film Fest of outdoor cinema continues on Friday, October 18th at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

Booksmart

Directed by Olivia Wilde, 2019 [R]

Booksmart feels innovative, inclusive, and progressive. Without a doubt, it is one of the best debut films by an actor-turned-director.

– Israel Acosta Aroche, Konexión

Olivia Wilde’s electric feature debut, “Booksmart,” is a stellar high school comedy with an A+ cast, a brilliant script loaded with witty dialogue, eye-catching cinematography, swift editing, and a danceable soundtrack. Most importantly, it’s incredibly fun to watch again and again. While paying homage to the teen comedies that have come before it, “Booksmart” sets itself apart with the characters at its center.

2019 PROXY Fall Film Fest: The Last Black Man in San Francisco

The 2019 PROXY Fall Film Fest of outdoor cinema continues on Friday, October 11th at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

The Last Black Man in San Francisco

Directed by Joe Talbot, 2019 [R]

The Last Black Man in San Francisco is a poetic and picturesque ode to the title city, to friendship and to the universal urge to find a place to call home.

– Peter Howell, Toronto Star

The city at the heart of Joe Talbot’s new film, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, is depicted with equal parts whimsy and despair.

In “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” the desire for home is at once existential and literal, a matter of self and safety, being and belonging. Much depends on Jimmie, who waxes and wanes, sometimes rises and then falls in a city that — with this ravishing movie — he insistently stakes a claim on, one indelible image at a time.

2019 PROXY Fall Film Fest: Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am

The 2019 PROXY Fall Film Fest of outdoor cinema begins Friday, October 4th at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am

Directed by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, 2019 [PG-13]

As with Morrison’s books, The Pieces I Am invites multiple, maybe even piecemeal, encores, because few writers wield the capacity to leave their readers with an evolving parting message with each subsequent reread.

– Melissa Vincent, Globe and Mail

This artful and intimate meditation on the legendary storyteller examines Toni Morrison’s life, her works and the powerful themes she has confronted throughout her literary career.

Writers don’t live only in their books, and Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’s film, produced under the auspices of PBS’s venerable “American Masters” series (and opening in Manhattan at Film Forum and Film at Lincoln Center on Friday) offers a look at Morrison that can complement an acquaintance with her work and inspire new reading. It’s less a biography than an extended essay, which is entirely a good thing. If you want a thorough documentation of everything Morrison has done and everyone she knows, there’s always Wikipedia. But if you’d prefer an argument for her importance and a sense of her presence, then you won’t be disappointed.

Architecture + the City Festival

Join us at PROXY for an evening in partnership with the Architecture + the City Festival:

Permanent Impermanent: The Past, Present and Future of Interim Use in San Francisco

A conversation inviting participants to reflect on the evolution of temporary, experimental urban activation in San Francisco and beyond.

SF Planning Department’s Robin Abad will moderate the conversation with: Douglas Burnham (envelope A+D), Liz Ogbu (Studio O), and Deanna van Buren (Designing Justice + Designing Spaces).

Come early to claim a good spot, enjoy an ice-cold beer from Fort Point Beer Company  and food from The Chairman.

FREE and Open to the Public // RSVP ON FACEBOOK

More about the conversation:

When envelope A+D created PROXY in 2011, its temporary, experimental approach to urbanism was almost unprecedented in its form, methodology, and scope. Eight years later, interim use is increasingly accepted as part of a next-generation toolkit for urban planning and development. City agencies, major developers, private clients, and local communities alike have embraced this strategy for activating temporarily vacant, disused, or in-transition spaces that range from small lots to huge urban sites.

This movement has opened new opportunities for architecture and design practices. Yet, in contrast to the familiar process of making buildings, the process of creating place through interim use has no defined rulebook, nor any consensus about what are its fundamental goals. Creating opportunities for meaningful community engagement? Building property values? Iterative design and prototyping? A new public relations channel? Interim use in the Bay Area has served each of these ends. With the first wave of Bay Area interim use projects reaching (or beyond) the end of their lifespans, this panel discussion invites participants to reflect on the evolution of this work in our region.

2019 PROXY Spring Series: BISBEE ’17

The 2019 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema begins Friday, April 12 at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

BISBEE ’17

Directed by Robert Greene, 2018 [PG]

A fascinating exercise in nonfiction filmmaking as a performative, interdisciplinary, collective act, as well as a provocative inquiry into how selective memory, ideology, shame and unspeakable trauma shape what we come to accept as official history.

– Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

BISBEE ’17 is a nonfiction feature film by award-winning filmmaker Robert Greene set in Bisbee, Arizona, an eccentric old mining town just miles away from both Tombstone and the Mexican border.

Radically combining collaborative documentary, western and musical elements, the film follows several members of the close knit community as they attempt to reckon with their town’s darkest hour. In 1917, nearly two-thousand immigrant miners, on strike for better wages and safer working conditions, were violently rounded up by their armed neighbors, herded onto cattle cars, shipped to the middle of the New Mexican desert and left there to die. This long-buried and largely forgotten event came to be known as the Bisbee Deportation.

The film documents locals as they play characters and stage dramatic scenes from the controversial story, culminating in a large scale recreation of the deportation itself on the exact day of its 100th anniversary. These dramatized scenes are based on subjective versions of the story and offer conflicting views of the event, underscoring the difficulty of collective memory, while confronting the current political predicaments of immigration, unionization, environmental damage and corporate corruption with direct, haunting messages about solidarity and struggle.

2019 PROXY Spring Series: KUSAMA: INFINITY

The 2019 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema continues Friday, April 19 at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

KUSAMA: INFINITY

Directed by Heather Lenz, 2018 [unrated]

It may seem strange for a movie to argue that an artist who at various times has been called the world’s most popular and has set a record for the highest amount paid for a work by a living female artist is somehow undervalued.
– Ben Kenigsberg, The New York Times

An entertaining account of one of modern art’s most unlikely success stories, Heather Lenz’s Kusama: Infinity charts the many ways Yayoi Kusama was marginalized — sometimes by the prejudices of an era, sometimes thanks to her own eccentricities — before becoming, late in life, one of the world’s most popular living artists. Part talent, part hustle, part pathological insistence on her own way of dealing with the world, it’s an optimistic narrative with plenty of colorful guest stars and should have a slightly broader appeal than the usual art-world portrait.

The 2019 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema continues Friday, April 26 at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST

Directed by Desiree Akhavan, 2018 [Unrated]

Navigating troubled culture-war waters with grace, humor and compassion, “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” is a movie that deserves a wide and diverse audience.

– A.O.Scott, The New York Times

Based on the celebrated novel by Emily M. Danforth, The Miseducation of Cameron Post follows Cameron (Chloë Grace Moretz) as she is sent to a gay conversion therapy center after getting caught with another girl in the back seat of a car on prom night. Run by the strict and severe Dr. Lydia Marsh (Jennifer Ehle) and her brother, Reverend Rick (John Gallagher Jr.)—himself an example of how those in the program can be “cured”—the center is built upon repenting for “same sex attraction.” In the face of intolerance and denial, Cameron meets a group of fellow sinners including the amputee stoner Jane (Sasha Lane), and her friend, the Lakota Two-Spirit, Adam (Forrest Goodluck). Together, this group of teenagers form an unlikely family as they fight to survive.

The 2019 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema continues Friday, May 3rd at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

THE LAST RACE

Directed by Michael Dweck, 2018 [Unrated]

“The Last Race” is a high art film about a blue-collar subject, and that unlooked-for ability to see beauty in the everyday is what makes it both a surprise and a success.

– Kenneth Turran, The L.A. Times

THE LAST RACE is a cinematic portrait of a Long Island stock car race track as its octogenarian owners struggle to maintain an American racing tradition in the face of a real estate development boom. The film merges image, and sound in a unique narrative form to bring the audience into the world of grassroots racing culture and explore a story that subtly grapples with questions of blue collar American identity that have taken on a profound relevance in the current political era.

The 2018 PROXY Fall Film Fest of outdoor cinema finishes with our final feature on Friday, November 2nd at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

SORRY TO BOTHER YOU

Directed by Boots Riley, 2018 [R]

If you’re not bothered — also tickled, irked, mystified and provoked — by Sorry to Bother You, then you’ve fallen asleep on the job. -A.O. Scott, The New York Times

In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, black telemarketer Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield) discovers a magical key to professional success, which propels him into a macabre universe of “powercalling” that leads to material glory. But the upswing in Cassius’ career raises serious red flags with his girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson), a performance artist and minimum-wage striver who’s secretly part of a Banksy-style activist collective. As his friends and co-workers organize in protest of corporate oppression, Cassius falls under the spell of his company’s cocaine-snorting CEO Steve Lift (Armie Hammer), who offers him a salary beyond his wildest dreams.

2018 PROXY FALL FILM FEST: Skate Kitchen

The 2018 PROXY Fall Film Fest of outdoor cinema continues Friday, October 19 at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

SKATE KITCHEN

Directed by Crystal Moselle, 2018 [R]

Moselle’s movie is an empowering portrait of young women on wheels, but it proves no less surefooted when the wheels come off.  -Justin Chang, The L.A. Times

In the first narrative feature from The Wolfpack director Crystal Moselle, Camille, an introverted teenage skateboarder (newcomer Rachelle Vinberg) from Long Island, meets and befriends an all-girl, New York City-based skateboarding crew called Skate Kitchen. She falls in with the in-crowd, has a falling-out with her mother, and falls for a mysterious skateboarder guy (Jaden Smith), but a relationship with him proves to be trickier to navigate than a kickflip.

Writer/director Crystal Moselle immersed herself in the lives of the skater girls and worked closely with them, resulting in the film’s authenticity, which combines poetic, atmospheric filmmaking and hypnotic skating sequences. SKATE KITCHEN precisely captures the experience of women in male-dominated spaces and tells a story of a girl who learns the importance of camaraderie and self-discovery.

2018 PROXY FALL FILM FEST: Blindspotting

The 2018 PROXY Fall Film Fest of outdoor cinema continues Friday, October 5 at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

BLINDSPOTTING

Directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada, 2018 [R]

Racism, gentrification, police brutality, start-up culture, corporate branding, social media, the justice system … Blindspotting is eager to take them all on with style and wit, and it succeeds more often than not. – Barry Hertz, Globe and Mail

Collin (Daveed Diggs) must make it through his final three days of probation for a chance at a new beginning. He and his troublemaking childhood best friend, Miles (Rafael Casal), work as movers, and when Collin witnesses a police shooting, the two men’s friendship is tested as they grapple with identity and their changed realities in the rapidly-gentrifying neighborhood they grew up in.

Longtime friends and collaborators, Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal co-wrote and star in this timely and wildly entertaining story about friendship and the intersection of race and class set against the backdrop of Oakland. Bursting with energy, style, and humor, and infused with the spirit of rap, hip-hop, and spoken word, Blindspotting, boldly directed by Carlos López Estrada in his feature film debut, is a provocative hometown love letter that glistens with humanity.

2018 PROXY FALL FILM FEST: Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

The 2018 PROXY Fall Film Fest of outdoor cinema kicks off Friday, September 28 at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?

Directed by Morgan Neville, 2018 [PG-13]

In these troubled times, it’s a good feeling to see a funny, touching and vital doc that is both timely and timeless.  –Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

For over thirty years, Fred Rogers, an unassuming minister, puppeteer, writer and producer was beamed daily into homes across America. In his beloved television program, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Fred and his cast of puppets and friends spoke directly to young children about some of life’s weightiest issues, in a simple, direct fashion. There hadn’t been anything like Mr. Rogers on television before and there hasn’t been since.

In Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (Twenty Feet from Stardom) looks back on the legacy of Fred Rogers, focusing on his radically kind ideas. While the nation changed around him, Fred Rogers stood firm in his beliefs about the importance of protecting childhood.

2018 PROXY Spring Series: BRIMSTONE & GLORY

The 2018 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema is closing with its final feature at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

BRIMSTONE & GLORY

Directed by Viktor Jakovleski, 2017 [NR]

Brimstone and Glory is community as catharsis and you can’t stop staring in stupefied astonishment.
-Tim Grierson, Paste Magazine

The National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico is a site of festivity unlike any other in the world. In celebration of San Juan de Dios, patron saint of firework makers, conflagrant revelry engulfs the town for ten days. Artisans show off their technical virtuosity, up-and-comers create their own rowdy, lo-fi combustibles, and dozens of teams build larger-than-life paper-mâché bulls to parade into the town square, adorned with fireworks that blow up in all directions. More than three-quarters of Tultepec’s residents work in pyrotechnics, making the festival more than revelry for revelry’s sake. It is a celebration that anchors a way of life built around a generations-old, homegrown business of making fireworks by hand. For the people of Tultepec, the National Pyrotechnic Festival is an explosive celebration, unrestrained delight and real peril. POSTPONED – 2018 PROXY Spring Series: QUEST

Stay tuned for a new date + time!

The 2018 PROXY Spring Series will continue next Friday, April 13 with THE FLORIDA PROJECT

The 2018 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema continues at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

QUEST

Directed by Jonathan Olshefski, 2017 [NR]

An intimate and patient portrait of a North Philadelphia family […] I’ve rarely seen a movie about citizenship as quietly eloquent as “Quest.” —New York Times

Filmed with vérité intimacy for nearly a decade, QUEST is the moving portrait of the Rainey family living in North Philadelphia. Beginning at the dawn of the Obama presidency, Christopher “Quest” Rainey, and his wife, Christine’a “Ma Quest” raise a family while nurturing a community of hip-hop artists in their home music studio. It’s a safe space where all are welcome, but this creative sanctuary can’t always shield them from the strife that grips their neighborhood. Epic in scope, Quest is a vivid illumination of race and class in America, and a testament to love, healing and hope.

Presented by HERE FOR NOWthe FREE, Friday evening film screenings begin at 7:45 pm with ‘doors’ opening at 7:00 pm.

2018 PROXY Spring Series: I, TONYA

The 2018 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema kicks off Friday, March 30 at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:.

I, TONYA

Directed by Craig Gillespie, 2017 [R]

The Tonya Harding film you never knew you wanted.
-Jake Coyle, Associated Press

Based on the unbelievable, but true events, I, TONYA is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan.

Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, mustachioed Sebastian Stan as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, and a tour-de-force performance from Allison Janney as her acid-tongued mother, LaVona Golden, Craig Gillespie’s I, Tonya is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding’s life and career in all of its unchecked––and checkered––glory.

Presented by HERE FOR NOWthe FREE, Friday evening film screenings begin at 7:45 pm with ‘doors’ opening at 7:00 pm.

2018 PROXY Spring Series: THE FLORIDA PROJECT

The 2018 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema continues at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

THE FLORIDA PROJECT

Directed by Sean Baker, 2017 [R]

One of the most effective, honest portraits of childhood you’ll ever see, and a touching, poignant snapshot of American life in 2017. —Detroit News

The Florida Project tells the story of a precocious six-year-old and her ragtag group of friends whose summer break is filled with childhood wonder, possibility and a sense of adventure while the adults around them struggle with hard times. Set on a stretch of highway just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, The Florida Project follows six-year-old Moonee (the outstanding Brooklynn Prince) and her rebellious mother Halley (Bria Vinaite) over the course of a single summer. The two live week to week at “The Magic Castle,” a budget motel managed by Bobby (Willem Dafoe), whose stern exterior hides a deep reservoir of kindness and compassion. Warm, winning, and gloriously alive, Sean Baker’s The Florida Project is a deeply moving and unforgettably poignant look at childhood.

Presented by HERE FOR NOWthe FREE, Friday evening film screenings begin at 7:45 pm with ‘doors’ opening at 7:00 pm.

2018 PROXY Spring Series: THE ROAD MOVIE

The 2018 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema continues at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

THE ROAD MOVIE

Directed by Dmitrii Kalashnikov, 2018 [NR]

A “That’s Entertainment!” of vehicular horrors…a landscape of cruel fate and calamity from which it’s impossible to avert your gaze — though sometimes you may wish you had.
-Dennis Harvey, Variety

A mosaic of asphalt adventures, landscape photography, and some of the craziest stuff you’ve ever seen. Dmitrii Kalashnikov’s THE ROAD MOVIE is a stunning compilation of video footage shot exclusively via the deluge of dashboard cameras that populate Russian roads. The epitome of a you-have-to-see-it-to-believe-it documentary captures a wide range of spectacles through the windshield-including a comet crashing down to Earth, an epic forest fire, and no shortage of angry motorists taking road rage to wholly new and unexpected levels-all accompanied by bemused commentary from unseen and often stoic drivers and passengers.

2018 PROXY Spring Series: LADY BIRD

The 2018 PROXY Spring Series of outdoor cinema continues at the PROXY Walk-In Theater with:

LADY BIRD

Directed by Greta Gerwig, 2017 [R]

A heartfelt coming-of-age story that perfectly captures the bittersweet transition from adolescence to dawning adulthood… – Village Voice

In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird’s father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

“An astonishing, often challenging and sharp examination of race in the United States”
—Globe & Mail

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote to his literary agent describing his next project, Remember This House, a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends—Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only thirty pages of his manuscript. In this incendiary new documentary, filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished: a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders, the civil rights movement, and #BlackLivesMatter.

Fall Film Festival: Morris From America

Friday, October 7

Morris From America
Directed by Chad Hartigan, 2016 [R]
Sundance 2016 Awards for Screenwriting and Acting

Morris is 13, chubby, and loves the Notorious B.I.G. His single dad (Craig Robinson) just uprooted him from Brooklyn to move to Heidelberg, Germany. As an African-American teenager who likes to spit rhymes and freestyle, he’s a fish-out-of-water, adrift in a very white, very foreign new home. When he meets a beautiful and rebellious girl named Katrin, he instantly falls in love and she challenges him to come out of his shell. As Morris rides a roller-coaster of emotions, the film captures a heartwarming and disarmingly honest look at adolescence, acceptance, and father-son relationships — and the film achieves the rare feat of being both poignant and hilariously entertaining.

Featuring a breakout appearance by Markees Christmas, and an incredibly touching and nuanced performance by Craig Robinson, who has been receiving tremendous praise for his first dramatic role.

Beethoven in the City at PROXY

Wednesday, May 11 at 3-4pm

As a part of their celebration of 20 years in SF, Cypress String Quartet is bringing Beethoven to The City.  “Beethoven in The City” will consist of a series of 16 performances by the Cypress String Quartet in May 2016, with each concert featuring one of Beethoven’s string quartets. Concerts will be free and will be presented in 16 different and varied publicly accessible spaces, including events in each of the 11 supervisory districts. Locations will include iconic settings such as Golden Gate Park and Yerba Buena Gardens, as well as community anchor institutions such as the San Francisco General Hospital, the St. Anthony’s Foundation, and a variety of other sites.

“Beethoven in The City” was conceived by the CSQ as a way not only to give back to the city that has fostered and inspired their music making, but also as a celebration of San Francisco. Through “Beethoven in The City,” the CSQ aims to bring Beethoven’s music to the broadest range of individuals possible. As a composer who overcame severe personal challenges to propagate his belief in the equality of humankind, Beethoven is a great ambassador for both classical music and human rights, and CSQ believes his music can speak to anyone. Come join us this May for an incredible City-wide musical celebration!

Winner of the U.S. Grand Jury Prize (Documentary), 2015 Sundance Film Festival

Despite growing up on the Lower East Side, the six Angulo brothers know little of New York City or the outside world, having spent most of their lives locked away in their apartment. Nicknamed “The Wolfpack,” most of what they know of the world has been gleaned from the films they watch obsessively and recreate meticulously, using elaborate homemade props and costumes. After one of the brothers escapes the apartment, the others soon want to follow, leading to a chance encounter with first-time film director Crystal Moselle, whose extraordinary portrait captures the thrills of The Wolfpack’s discoveries and illustrates the transformative power of movies.

Fire Brunch 5 at Biergarten

April 18, 1906 was a catastrophic day for San Francisco. In the early morning hours, a great earthquake roiled the ground beneath the city. A couple living on Hayes Street at Gough tried to make the most of the situation by eating breakfast like civilized people. Unfortunately, their meal of ham and eggs caught fire and went on to burn for four days.

For the fifth year in a row, The Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association is hosting a community brunch to gather in remembrance of the Great Fire. Aside from coming together for some delicious brunch at Biergarten, it’s an excuse to meet your neighbors in advance of another neighborhood-wide emergency. All proceeds will benefit the activities of the HVNA.

If you’re an early visitor to Ritual Coffee or Juice Shop, you can swing by for an historic walking tour of the neighborhood at 10am.

SFMTA Octavia Boulevard Design Open House

Octavia Boulevard is celebrating a decade of life in 2015. If you’re up on your Hayes Valley and PROXY history, then you know that Octavia Boulevard was created after the Central Freeway was torn down after a committed effort on the part of the then-nascent HVNA. With the freeway removed, the potential for green spaces like Patricia’s Green and urban experiments like PROXY was created.

Not all of the parcels along Octavia Boulevard have been developed, however, and the City of SF is “reviewing conditions and proposing solutions to keep people moving safely and to encourage a vibrant, sustainable streetscape.”

Stop by PROXY on Thursday, April 16th from 3pm-7pm to learn about and provide input on the ideas that have been laid out so far. Check out Hoodline for a nice summary of the plans that you can review if you can’t make the design open house.

Hayes Valley Artists Holiday Pop-Up Gallery

PROXY is pleased to welcome to a collection of Hayes Valley artists to the auxiliary container at Octavia and Linden for a holiday pop-up gallery. Like the eclectic storefronts that line Hayes Street and the mix of people and puppies you’ll find lounging in Patricia’s Green on a sunny afternoon, the range of art that will be on display can’t be neatly described in a few sentences so you’ll have to drop by to see the works yourself.

The gallery will be open daily from 9am to 7pm  starting on November 26th and its final day of the season will be December 24th. The hours may extend beyond 7pm if foot traffic is good, but the show’s curator Madeline Behrens-Brigham wanted a consistent schedule in order to avoid people seeking out the gallery only to realize they had mixed up the operating hours. She says,  “I’m a firm believer that if you wear high heels to the dance, you don’t take them off halfway.”

A casual artists + community opening will take place on Saturday, November 27th from 5-7pm. There are also plans for Sunday tea-time talks, face painting and whatever else they cook up. Check back or follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for daily updates as the gallery’s programming gets finalized.

POSTPONED: Aether takes SF on an Urban Adventure

UPDATE: This event has been postponed. Check back for updates on when it will be rescheduled. 11.06.2014

Cruising its coastal highways on a motorcycle is one of California’s quintessential experiences. Unfortunately, so is weaving through stop-and-go traffic in order to cross any bridge to anywhere, and that takes skill and confidence as a rider. So when Aether Apparel thought of who they could turn to to lead an urban maneuvering skills training, the answer was right behind them with blue lights flashing: a motorcycle cop.

Details from Aether about the Sunday, November 9th event are below, and you can buy your ticket on their website.

Join us Sunday November 9th (11/9/14) for a day of urban motorcycle riding and technical skills training. Prepare for Urban Adventure.

Following our successful events in Los Angeles and New York, this Bay Area edition will begin with a scenic morning ride led by SF-based motorcycle collective Piston and Chain. The route will take riders on a tour of some of the most scenic riding roads in the area and will conclude at a training location on Treasure Island.

The afternoon will kick off with an on-site catered lunch, followed by skills training by active police motor officer Kerry Schilf. Participants will have the chance to learn how to “ride like a cop” by practicing on the same cone’s course motor officer use to train, while receiving critical feedback and coaching.

The day’s events will culminate with a motorcycle obstacle course designed by staff from RawHyde Adventures, the guru’s of off-road adventure riding. Here, bikes of all makes and models will use their low-speed handling skills to navigate through an urban debris field for the chance to win prizes and give-aways from Piston and Chain, RawHyde Adventures, and Aether.

ITINERARY:

8:00 AM – Event start. Breakfast will be provided at AETHERsf at 489 Hayes Street. Riders will receive a briefing on the days events as well as turn sheets for the morning ride.

8:30 AM – Riders begin to depart in waves for the morning ride.

12:00 PM – Riders arrive at the Treasure Island training location. Lunch is served.

1:00 PM – Riders will receive technical training and riding tips from motor officer Kerry Schilf, while practicing on a “motor officer training” cones course.

3:30PM – Riders will have the chance to compete in our urban debris field obstacle course. Navigate this course with the least foot “dabs” and you could win give-aways from Aether, RawHyde, and Piston and Chain.

4:30 PM – Awards announced and distributed.

Limited space available.

Date: Sunday November 9th (11/9/14), rain or shine.

Location: 489 Hayes Street, San Francisco, CA 94102

If you’re planning on riding this event 2-Up, you will need to purchase 2 tickets. (Ticket price is going primarily to off-set the cost of provided breakfast and lunch)

PROXY_ART: Transient Havens

Valentin Ruhry is a “sculptor in the traditional sense, working with untraditional materials”. Those materials have often been industrial in nature; in Untitled (wave), he uses naked fluorescent tubes to create a gentle wave of light that feels like it is about to push forward and fill the room.

Exhibition view of Untitled (wave) in Newport Beach, 2010, Christine Konig Galerie

Ruhry spent the summer teaching at the San Francisco Art Institute. His class, titled the Invisible Institute, prompted “students to question how their practice may function outside of the traditional studio or white cube, by encouraging the use of alternative materials and art processes.” Ruhry happened to be living in Hayes Valley and often passed by and through PROXY. A chance introduction to a PROXY staffer led to Transient Havens, the upcoming exhibition of Ruhry’s students’ works at PROXY on Friday, August 1st from 5pm-8pm.

A full description of the exhibition is below.

A one day exhibition with works by Anonymous Artist, Noah Brill, Carl Martin, Valentin Ruhry, Christian Valla and Nancy Winkelmann.

Curated by Pierre-François Galpin and Marie Martraire.

Taking place within a fenced provisional placeholder for a future permanent building, the one-day art exhibition Transient Havens prompts viewers to consider the potentials for urban and social impermanence in the heart of Hayes Valley. For this exhibition, the featured artworks by Noah Brill, Carl Martin, Valentin Ruhry, Christian Valla, Nancy Winkelmann, and an anonymous artist take shelter in this transient haven privately managed by the design firm envelope A+D, yet overtly visible from the street. Together, the featured temporary art installations redefine perhaps fixed distinctions between private and public space in this hip neighborhood of small and portable “pop-up” style retail pods such as Proxy, among other fancy restaurants, and fashion trendy shops. Each taken individually, the artworks make visible common, yet distinct, concealed aspects of private life, and challenge different notions of invisibility, accessibility, and common understandings of territoriality.

From the cavern of a closed metal container, Noah Brill’s sound installation shouts inner thoughts about the daily surroundings aloud. Similar to the “thought bubbles” in comics, allowing readers to enter characters’ inner and secret opinions, Brill’s piece invites viewers to put in perspective the shifting private/public status of the area.

Christian Valla’s Neophytes is a video installation about loss of territory, roots and identity. The installation echoes the heritage of the Native American people of the Ohlone tribe, who lived in dome-shaped huts for thousands of years, until Spanish conquistadors burnt down their villages, forced the tribe to take Spanish sir names and convert to Christianity. By building a domelike, temporary structure as a display for the video, this heritage is connected to the present day where families are forced to evict their homes in San Francisco due to extreme living costs. Neophytes is a moment of reflection on the cultural consequences of these movements.

Wood-burning disturbed quotes from the story books that were read to us by our elders into the wooden rungs of a rope ladder, Nancy Winkelmann’s work takes on the concept of escaping to a refuge by climbing through the harsh realities of life. The steps lead upwards to the idea of a safe haven found within the tree houses of our childhood, but also exists within each of us in adulthood.

Carl Martin’s Heavy Reader installation features a familiar floor perforated by a series of books after violently falling from the sky, altogether telling the story of a man, and inviting the viewers in his surreal home.

For his work Territory, Valentin Ruhry installed an ensemble of flags along the space’s fence, made out of found camping fabrics that he sewed together, suggesting notions of territoriality, property, and frontiers linked to this enclosed exhibition space.

Finally, a contribution by an anonymous artist, pre-existing to the exhibition, reminds of the area’s temporality and daily use.

What was previously the path of the former San Francisco Central Freeway, is today, on August 1st, the site for transient havens created by each of these installations. As remnants of past, present, and future urban fabric of the neighborhood, each invites viewers to pause and rethink about the local urban issues in Hayes Valley, San Francisco, and the Bay Area at large, leaving in turn an imprint in the visitors’ minds.

This temporary exhibition is organized by members of The Invisible Institute, a class of SFAI‘s public education program.

Stammtisch Ride Season with Biergarten and Rapha Cycle Club

According to the Rapha Cycle Club, “‘stammtisch’ translates from German as ‘regulars’ table’, the gathering (and drinking) spot for locals in a neighborhood pub.” It’s fitting then that the weekly Stammtisch Ride ends at Biergarten to refuel with a pint or two of Weihenstephan hefeweizen.

The 2-hour ride happens every Thursday during spring and summer. Meet at Rapha Cycle Club in the Marina at 6pm and follow the banded schmetterling to end at Biergarten at 8pm.

Weekly Bike Ride with Aether Apparel

PROXY has become something of a nexus of cycling activity in San Francisco, what with SoSF Bike Tours and Biergarten leading the way with boutique tours of the city and evening rides that end with beer, respectively. It should be no surprise, then, that stylish performance retailer Aether Apparel has gotten into the mix with a weekly Friday morning bike ride. Riders meet at Aether at 7:30am and roll out at 8, just enough time to grab a cup of La Libertad from Ritual or an Alpha Green from Juice Shop.

#burgerwednesday at Biergarten

Let’s say you did yourself a solid and went to Basic Training’s Wednesday 12pm class, but you’re feeling a little peckish after all of that urban adventuring around Hayes Valley. Lucky for you, the folks at Biergarten have you covered with #burgerwednesday. Each week they debut a new burger, like a reuben burger made with Foreign Cinema pastrami and housemade ‘kraut or a beef burger topped with teriyaki glazed hen-o-the-woods mushrooms, beet sprout/scallion slaw and house ginger mayo, all piled on an organic challah bun. Talk about an ideal workout recovery meal.

Every Wednesday.

SoSF Bike Tours Launch Party + Raffle

The folks at SoSF Bike Tours have a lot to celebrate: they recently moved into their new location across the alley at 370 B Linden Street; they re-upped on their lease at PROXY; and they’ve launched a brand new bike rental business under the name CityRide Bike Rentals. Phew.

Being the class acts that they are, they’re not only providing free barbecue and drinks but are hosting a charity raffle that will benefit the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. They’ve tapped a few fellow PROXY vendors for raffle prizes, like Biergarten and Ritual Coffee Roasters, so you know the goods are gonna be worth it.

The festivities will be under way on Thursday, June 5th from 6-8pm.

The Zirkus is in town

Biergarten’s older and wiser sister restaurant, Suppenkuche, is finally legal in the United States to imbibe the frosty biers they’re known for. Biergarten closes early at 2pm today so that everyone can swing by the anniversary zirkus that will be in full force at Suppenkuche.

Oh, and like every event in San Francisco worth its mettle, the zirkus will be a costume party so please dress appropriately.

Half Hitch Goods X Georgette Crimson Launch

The last time Half Hitch Goods rolled into PROXY, owner Carrie Caillouette was first struck by a bunch of motorcyclists gathered in front of Aether Apparel for the first monthly #AETHERmoto ride. The mass of leather-clad biker dudes parted like the Red Sea and Carrie pulled in, only then to be struck by a second observation: at a critical maneuvering juncture,  her truck wouldn’t go into reverse. Good-natured as always, Carrie pulled nose-in to a space and made needing a new transmission into a metaphor for moving forward and not looking back. We’re on board with that.

We’re happy to welcome Half Hitch Goods to PROXY again for the launch of Georgette Crimson, an eclectic womenswear label “built on the everyday curiosities and little inspirations we stumble upon”.  The Rolling Shoppe will be parked at PROXY from 11am to 5pm.
